Mexico take steps towards medicinal cannabis regulation

MEXICO CITY - Mexico’s health ministry on Tuesday published rules to manage the utilization of medicinal cannabis, a serious step during a broader reform to make the world’s largest legal cannabis market within the Latin American country.

The new regulation was signed off by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and can now allow pharmaceutical companies to start doing medical research on cannabis products. The cannabis reform happening includes the recreational use of marijuana, and can create what would be the world’s biggest national cannabis market in terms of population.

The new medicinal rules state companies which wish to hold out research need to obtain permission from the Mexican health regulator, COFEPRIS, and this research has got to be wiped out strictly controlled, independent laboratories.

“The standard of regulation is extremely , very high,” said Luisa Conesa, a lawyer and pro-cannabis activist who spearheaded legal challenges that led to decriminalization of medical cannabis.

“(The regulation) isn't aimed toward patients growing their own cannabis, it's aimed toward pharmaceutical companies producing pharmaceutical derivatives of cannabis which are classified as controlled substances that require prescription," he said.

The regulation also sets rules for the sowing, cultivation and harvesting of cannabis for medicinal purposes, which might allow businesses to grow marijuana legally on Mexican soil.

While some cannabis plant imports are permitted for companies looking to make products, exports of Mexican-grown cannabis is prohibited.

Foreign weed companies from Canada and therefore the us are watching Mexico with interest. Many had delayed making investment decisions thanks to policy uncertainty and were expecting the ultimate regulation to be published.

Mexico’s lawmakers also are within the final stages of legalizing recreational use of marijuana, with the bill expected to pass within the next period of Congress.

The legislation marks a serious shift during a country bedeviled for years by violence between feuding drug cartels, which have long made many dollars growing marijuana illegally and smuggling it into the US.

Why Medical Marijuana and why now?

More states are passing laws that allow people to use medical marijuana. So what does it treat, and who can and should use it? Pain is the main reason people ask for a prescription, says Barth Wilsey, MD, a pain medicine specialist at the University of California Davis Medical Center. It could be from headaches, a disease like cancer, or a long-term condition, like glaucoma or nerve pain. If you live in a state where medical marijuana is legal and your doctor thinks it would help, you’ll get a “marijuana card.” You will be put on a list that allows you to buy marijuana from an authorized seller, called a dispensary. Doctors also may prescribe medical marijuana to treat: Muscle spasms caused by multiple sclerosis Nausea from cancer chemotherapy Poor appetite and weight loss caused by chronic illness, such as HIV, or nerve pain Seizure disorders Crohn's disease The FDA has also approved THC, a key ingredient in marijuana, to treat nausea and improve appetite. It's ava...

Everything You Need to Know about Rick Simpson Oil

Rick Simspsons oil is now available .  For over a decade now, Canadian medical marijuana activist Rick Simpson has been educating people about the incredible healing potential of cannabis oil. In 2003, Simpson discovered three suspicious spots on his face and neck and was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma skin cancer . When surgery didn’t work, he decided to explore an alternate route; using the same extracted cannabis oil he’d been making and taking orally for over a year on his newly discovered cancer. Simpson had been treating some health conditions from a previous injury with his cannabis oil when he recalled a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute stating that THC was found to kill cancer in mice . So, Simpson proceeded to apply the oil topically to the cancerous spots on his neck and face and covered them with bandages. In just four days, the skin underneath was healthy and pink. He was healing. Excited that he had disc...
